I teach CS Discoveries, a one-year curriculum developed by Code.org, but I do it over the course of two years and augment the set curriculum with explorations in digital photography, live coding with music, physical computing and robotics.
My goal is to motivate students to explore and have fun. To do this, I remove myself as far as possible from center stage in the classroom, while simultaneously shifting the responsibility for learning squarely onto the shoulders of the students. I often tell my students in as many words, "I need your attention so I can set you up, and then get out of your way as soon as possible."
My experiences with this teaching model have shown me that many students thrive in such a classroom culture, one that encourages exploration, creativity, and resourcefulness.
I have seen that students don't want the answers from the teacher; they don't even want the questions. They want the opportunity to ask and answer their own questions in the process of creating their own authentic learning.
